GymPal

Project Summary

The initial steps in the process of creating GymPal, my team and I conducted research through interviews relating to the top of recreation and leisure. The main goal was to find a way to improve an activity within that scope which ended up being: Going to the gym. Once research was complete, the main pain points for getting to the gym were time constraints, finding a parter to go with, and a lack of knowledge about different workouts.

What is GymPal?

GymPal is a concept app that allows a user to have a personalized experience in order to get them to go to the gym more comfortably. The app offers a variety of different options ranging from matching a user with another user in order to go to the gym with a partner, workout walkthroughs, statistical tracking, and more.

Creating Personas

Two personas were created to represent the opposite sides of the spectrum when looking at the scope and key points needed to effectively design the app from multiple perspectives.

Mapping out the Journey

Different scenarios were created in order to emulate that the two personas were different both in terms of skill and challenges.

Kacy Hill was the primary persona with pain points such as not having time to go to the gym, and not having enough knowledge to workout
correctly. Jake Fin, the more knowledgeable secondary persona, was looking to expand his horizons in the gym and become more serious.

Competitive Research

A competitive analysis was conducted in order to understand what was on the market, as well as what services that each competitor was offering. Each app was understood to have a specific audience and service which drove the idea for GymPal to be the full package service.

Paper Prototyping

Paper prototyping was done in order to make sure that the app's design was effectively executing the 4 key tasks that were defined as:

The user knows where their settings are and how to customize them
The user can navigate through the workout pages
The user understands the "Buddy Finder" system
The user understands and can customize the statistics page

Designing the Logo

The logo went through a simple process of encasing the two first letters of each word and a tag line. Originally the colors were a light blue and dark blue, but were eventually recolored to be white and yellow to contrast with the app's blue setting.

Creating the App

The main goal of the app was to be easy to use while encompassing a vast amount of information and data to address the wants and needs of varying levels of users.
The app itself received flying colors when presented, but there was room for innovation and expansion.
